I totally get where you're coming from, an...Ha! I totally get where you're coming from, and love it! That's not waffle. I've got similar stories, though obviously given our different horror proclivities mine aren't so much gore but the little things that most people would think I was a sissy for being freaked by - like that when I was a little kid my teenage brother used to revel in playing Thriller over and over again because Vincent's vo and laugh used to send me climbing the walls in terror. Most people think that one is pretty funny :p

Gore wise, I think I'm not scared a lot of the time because of the filmmaking is not good enough to make me so engaged that I'm scared for the characters. A lot of the time obviously that's done on purpose to give the audience some distance or makes you a fullblown voyeur, but I find it leaves me cold. Often it'll be really small things that I have to shake off. Like, if you've seen American History X, there's this bit with the corner of a street curb - man, that stayed with me for ages. And Texas Chainsaw; I found that very creepy not just cos the characters are mental but because the filmmaking gives you no signals of how quickly some things will happen...

I'm completely with you about Blair Witch too :) I'm a big mise-en-abime fan so it was nice it got so much attention but the only bit that freaked me out was the facing the corner bit at the end. The rest didn't particularly grip me :/

See, that there ^^^^ That's waffle...helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763679557322734420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1995190144152148970.post-64886448973178845862011-05-16T17:05:27.472+01:002011-05-16T17:05:27.472+01:00As a child, my dad made me watch the metamorphosis...As a child, my dad made me watch the metamorphosis scene in American Werewolf, which although clever and awesome, scared me so much that I remember it so vividly. He found it hilarious and made me watch it again and again until I stopped crying. I was very young, 5 maybe. My old cousin was there too and I was pretty traumatised from the terrific parenting!!

This stayed with me for most of my child hood, although I really enjoyed reading Stephen King books as a child I could never bring myself to watch horror. I think it is the gore I don't like. I love the suspense, the build and so on, but it is the graphic stuff that gets me. The stuff that most people laugh at. I haven't seen any of the SAW franchise for this reason.

What is weird is that my wife swears by Blair Witch as her scariest experience, but i just found it boring, apart from the last bit....eeeeeek

So there we have it. A little look at me and my broken mind. I hope that makes sense.

Sorry for the waffle

CCustardhttp://www.frontroomcinema.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1995190144152148970.post-90663471116133949302011-05-16T14:06:25.284+01:002011-05-16T14:06:25.284+01:00Hey C, unfortunately it has - I hadn't noticed...Hey C, unfortunately it has - I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it until you said, and it's deleted my reply to you ha! Silly outages.

Thanks for the comment dude, in my reply I said I thought I was rambling here :D I hope you will enjoy Attack The Block. As to Insidious, you're not missing that much. It's no Shining.

Out of curiosity what aspect of Horror do you not like? Personally I only like (and being a bit scared goes hand in hand with that) by supernatural, unexplainable horror stuff. I have a few favourites that are people running around killing people (Funny Games, Audition etc) but generally I'll only get into them if (like your list really) there's a genre mix, comedy or satire maybe.

Mind you I'm contradicting myself - Ant's got all obsessed with Amacus horror at the mo, so we've been watching mountains of traditional Brit horror movies : )helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763679557322734420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1995190144152148970.post-49159720662335875652011-05-16T11:18:05.139+01:002011-05-16T11:18:05.139+01:00I have deffo commented on this post...did it get l...I have deffo commented on this post...did it get lost in the great blogger power cut?

CustieCustardhttp://www.frontroomcinema.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1995190144152148970.post-15677669190262684412011-05-12T17:35:56.832+01:002011-05-12T17:35:56.832+01:00Thanks dude, I thought I rambled a bit too much :p...Thanks dude, I thought I rambled a bit too much :p

Cinemas are totally memory lane now, if I ever came into a lot of money, I'd for real build one to be not for profit and go part digital with one really big, old fashioned design, with the giant staircases in english oak, no lights on the floor, and so massive if you screamed it'd bounce around the room for 15 minutes!

Projectors I suggest for everyone; we're obsessed with second hand bying and got ours for about £250. Great for the kids too when you got lots of friends over and theres too many to park in front of one tv if they want to watch something :phelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763679557322734420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1995190144152148970.post-51407705935109779752011-05-12T12:23:35.749+01:002011-05-12T12:23:35.749+01:00Great write up Hels!! Oh yeah, before children.

I am so looking forward to seeing Attack the Block, I have read nothing but good things about it and your post confirms this, so thanks!!

Insidious I think I will pass, I am not good with scary films. In fact I am like the anti scary film meister. Has to be fluffy!!

I am also with you about how the cinema is now just a trip down memory lane. It seemed such an amazing place when we were young. But now the rubbish cineplex's have ruined this. To be fair there are good cinema's out there, The Marina is not the best example of one. Chichester has a great one with VIP rooms.

But in all honesty like you with a projector watching films at home is great, big screen great sound system and I can pause it to go for a wee.

Thanks for posting this Hels, it was a great read.

CustardCustardhttp://www.frontroomcinema.comnoreply@blogger.com
